As Zambian Breweries, we, the country’s largest beer manufacturer, have stepped up our support for the nation’s fight against cholera by donating K686,250 worth of materials to Lusaka City Council (LCC) and the Zambia Environmental Agency (ZEMA). We have provided personal protective equipment (PPE), disinfectants, and other items to assist in stopping the spread of the disease.
“The outbreak affects everyone in our communities, directly or indirectly, and it takes collective action to overcome. Zambian Breweries stands in solidarity with those affected by this crisis; those who have lost loved ones, and the frontline staff working around the clock to ensure the outbreak is contained and lives are preserved,” said Thais Cavinatto, Zambian Breweries Country Director.
Through the Manja Pamodzi Foundation, we have committed a further K250,000 towards community clean-up activities to be rolled out over the coming weeks in nominated areas regarded as cholera hotspots.
“We believe in the power of collective action, and together with the Lusaka City Council and ZEMA, we share a deep commitment to the well-being of our communities. Deeply entrenched in our DNA is the belief that we can only thrive when our communities thrive,” added Ms. Cavinatto.
Among the items donated were 50 bags of 20kgs granular chlorine; 250 cases of liquid chlorine; 250 cases of 400ml hand sanitizer; 250 gumboots; 250 work suits, 250 raincoats, and 200 30-litre batches of sewage disinfectant.
“It is gratifying to have companies such as ourselves respond to the call of supplementing the local authorities’ efforts to prevent the further spread of cholera, and ultimately saving lives,” said the Mayor of the City of Lusaka Chilando Chitangala when she received the items on behalf of the council.
Ms. Cavinatto further urged the public to take heed of critical preventive measures such as washing hands with soap, sanitizing, and maintaining strict all-around hygiene, as well as awareness initiatives endorsed by health authorities aimed at educating the public, dispelling myths, and fostering individual and collective preparedness to combat the disease.
In times of crisis, we believe in the strength of communities uniting for a common cause, and this collaborative approach is pivotal in the ongoing battle against the cholera outbreak.
“At Zambian Breweries, we thrive when our communities thrive. More than a donation; it’s a shared effort to protect our community and the lives of our people,” concluded Ms. Cavinatto.
