Zambian Breweries, stakeholders launch Motorbike Safety Training Programme in Lusaka ahead of Festive Season

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – Zambian Breweries, in collaboration with the Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST), Yango, and other stakeholders, has launched the Motorbike Safety Training Programme, a ground-breaking initiative focused on reducing motorbike related road accidents in Lusaka.

The first training session covered essential areas such as defensive driving, the use of proper safety equipment, and key road safety practices tailored to the needs of motorbike riders. In addition, a wide-reaching awareness campaign, aimed at the general public, will be rolled out to promote the shared responsibility in road safety.

Zambian Breweries’ Legal Corporate Affairs Director, Tawanda Hojane highlighted the importance of the programme, stating: “We are not only training riders but, also launching awareness campaigns to promote a culture of responsibility and safety on the roads. Together, we can significantly reduce accidents and build safer communities.”

In 2023, the Road Transport and Safety Agency recorded over 20% of reported road accidents involving motorbikes. This timely programme aims to enhance public safety awareness and foster responsible road use among the growing number of motorbike users in Zambia.

“Between January and June 2023, there were 802 motorbike-related crashes, with 405 accidents in the first quarter and 397 in the second. In 2024, from January to June, that number has unfortunately increased to 1,113,” stated Road Transport and Safety Agency Board Chairman, Engineer Allen Mate.

“Through this training, our goals are to reduce accidents, save lives, and create a lasting culture of safety among riders—not only in Lusaka but nationwide. I am confident that this initiative will make a meaningful difference on our roads,” he said.

In recent years, Zambian Breweries has been active in road safety through various initiatives such as the creation of school safety zones – a comprehensive project that not only included engineer works, but also training and awareness programmes aimed at making roads safer for school-going children.

Zambia Road Safety Trust CEO Daniel Mwamba, emphasised the programme’s inclusive vision, saying: “Our goal is to ensure that every road user—whether pedestrian, cyclist, driver, or motorbike rider — can travel safely. This initiative goes beyond just training; it’s a commitment to the safety and well-being of every individual on our roads, particularly motorbike riders.”

In a show of support, Yango has committed to supplying hundreds of safety kits for motorbike riders participating in the training sessions.

“The growth of motorbike delivery services in Zambia has transformed how goods and services are delivered, but it has also contributed to a rise in road traffic accidents, many of which can be prevented through safety training and the use of proper equipment. Our partnership with ZRST and Zambian Breweries reflects our shared commitment to safer roads for all,” said Yango’s Commerce Manager, Moono Malundu.

The Zambia Police, who were key to the training reassured the attendees that they will continue working closely with the stakeholders to enforce traffic laws and that the training leads to tangible improvements.

“Road safety is not just the responsibility of Law enforcement; it is something we all need to take seriously. I encourage every rider and other road users to do their part in keeping Zambia’s roads safe,” said Zambia Police Service Superintendent, Paul Siloka.

With the festive season approaching — a period when road accidents typically increase — Zambian Breweries and its partners are determined to make a tangible impact through initiatives such as the Motorbike Safety Training Programme marked by a collective commitment to the wellbeing of Zambia’s communities.
